Single Equality Act is Needed to Complement New Commission

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 3rd Mar 2005

Commenting on the plans for a single equality commission (The Commission for Equality and Human Rights - CEHR) detailed in the Equality Bill which was published today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Malcolm Bruce MP said: "The establishment of the CEHR is a significant and very welcome step forward towards eradicating discrimination in our society.

"By drawing together the individual bodies tackling discrimination, the Commission will be stronger for being united. It is illogical therefore to have lots of separate pieces of discrimination legislation backing it up. We now need a single Equality Act to complement the Commission and simplify discrimination law."
