Liberal Democrat Women and Equality spokesperson Lorely Burt today said the government must not ignore Iran's human rights record: "Although peaceful efforts to detract Iran from producing nuclear weapons are welcome, Blair's proposal to involve Iran in the international community should never detract from the UK's total condemnation of their human rights record."

She highlighted the way the human rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual people, women, students, trade unionists and ethnic minorities are being abused or ignored in Iran, including reports that a man was executed there last month for being gay.
